About Us

Over the next 7 years, we’re going to make a big investment in our network, people and communities. Passionate about delivering safe, reliable, high quality services, we’ll make life better for our customers and local communities.

We’ll deliver a better travel experience with simpler ticketing, newer trains, faster journeys and more services. Just some of the improvements we’ve got planned include:

  • Introducing a new fleet of 90 Bombardier trains to our suburban routes
  • Increasing peak time capacity by nearly a third with 52,000 more seats to and from Waterloo
  • Reducing mainline journey times and introducing more services and more frequent trains
  • Implementing a £90m network-wide station investment programme
  • Improving accessibility with step-free access, tactile steps, hearing loops and more automatic doors, priority seats and accessible toilets at our stations
  • Providing free Wi-Fi on our mainland trains and at all our stations (5x more bandwidth)
  • Delivering live updates to passengers
  • Making ticketing easier with new machines, Advance tickets, a smartcard scheme, mobile phone barcode tickets, flexible season tickets, debit schemes and discounts for 16-18 year olds
  • Having 100 Customer Ambassadors with mobile ticket machines
  • Improving passenger assistance with Blue Assist cards and reduced notice times.

Key Roles

It’s a dream job for many people. But it comes with heaps of responsibility. It’s up to you to deliver punctual and reliable services that get everyone to their destination safely and on time. To earn your place in the seat, you must be dedicated, customer focused and passionate about safety with a healthy respect for the rules.

This isn’t a 9 to 5 job. It’s a way of life. And the rewards are well worth it. You’ll enjoy a career that is very different and training that’s out of this world.

As well as CPD for experienced drivers, all new drivers take part in a yearlong training programme, with practical training and learning in the classroom and our simulators. If you’re calm under pressure, willing to learn and have high levels of concentration, you’ll enjoy driving a diverse range of trains across our network. As these are safety critical roles, you must be aged over 21 and able to pass a medical examination with eyesight, hearing and colour vision tests.

Most customer journeys will start with you. Whether it's a leisurely afternoon or the manic morning rush hour, you’ll need to make a good impression and provide a quick, high quality service to all kinds of customers.

Wearing your uniform with pride, you must be able to get to grips with different tickets and provide information about our journeys, prices and the local area.

Totally focused and always on the ball, you’ll send our trains on their way and make sure our customers arrive safely. A great communicator and organiser, you’ll stay in constant touch with our signallers and provide clear and accurate information.

Working outdoors in all weathers at all times of the day, you’ll answer queries, solve problems and provide a reassuring and sympathetic ear. Sticking to the rules, you must be able to think on your feet and arrange alternative transport when needed.

We check the tickets and passes of customers coming in and out of larger train stations. We stop fare evaders, provide a warm welcome, make people feel safe and help customers go quickly on their way.

As soon as customers get on our trains, you’ll make them feel welcome, comfortable and safe. Always providing a prompt, polite and professional service, you’ll deal with delays, ticketing issues and all kinds of unforeseen problems that can disturb our customers on their journey.
